Tri-Valley Moto & Doc Wong Announce March GS/Dual Sport Clinic

October 2008

Great News! GS Dirt Riding Clinic on Friday, October 24th & Sunday, October 26th, the first of our Fall Series

Doc Wong and I, representing BMW, have teamed up to create a special dirt clinic for riders of bigger dualsport bikes and novice dirt riders.

CalBMW GS/Dualsport Beginner's Clinic and Trail Ride

Doc got a new R1200GS this year, and the clinic will be geared towards big dualsport bikes from R 1100 and 1150 or 1200 GS's to F650's, the larger KTM Adventure bikes to KLR 650's, DR 650's and similar medium weight dualsport bikes.

If you are a complete newbie or a vertically challenged rider, come on as small a bike as you like. Bike size is not considered a prerequisite to attend the class.

The dirt drills are designed to accommodate the novice dirt rider. If you're more of an intermediate or advanced dirt rider we'd appreciate any help you'd like to give in doing demonstrations, leading a trail riding group after lunch, or any other function that requires technical skill.

This clinic is held on two separate days. Please note: Friday evening's Seminar is a prerequisite to Sunday's drills and ride, and all sign-ups, releases and checks will be collected on Friday night.

Cost: A $20.00 donation to the Clear Creek Legal Defense Fund / Blue Ribbon Coalition, to help keep the California dirt riding areas open.

>> Part A: Friday evening Oct 24, starting 7:15 PM will be a 1 1/2 hour Seminar at:

California BMW/Triumph in Mountain View
2490 Old Middlefield Way
Mountain View, CA 94043
(650) 966-1183

Attendance at the lecture is essential and required for you to attend Sunday's drills and ride. We'll be going over vital information and demonstrations of the drills. Of course you'll be doing the drills at your own level on Sunday. Topics covered range from cornering to balance, sliding, braking and doing wheelies on your bike.

>> Part B: Sunday 9 AM to 3 PM will be the meeting at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area-(SVRA) where those drills covered on Friday night will be practiced until lunch. After lunch we will break up into groups based on skill level and ride some of the wider, easier dirt roads of Hollister Hills SVRA.

Kari Prager of Cal BMW/Triumph will be leading the group of larger dual-sport bikes. More experienced ride leader volunteers are needed, so let us know if you'd be willing to lead a group in the afternoon.

TO REGISTER: E-mail Doc ASAP at: Docwong@docwong.com (limited to the first 40 riders, so if you register and can't make it, please let me know ASAP as there will be a waiting list) and please cc Kari@CALmoto.com so we can have an appropriate number of chairs and refreshments at the lecture evening. Anyone is welcome to come to the evening "Dirt Riding Workshop-Talks and Demonstrations" part of the clinic. This is not limited in numbers, however the practical "Dirt Ride Drills and Dirt Ride" part of the clinic is limited to 40 riders.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE DIRT CLINIC

  1. Snacks, lunch and water. Kari will bring extra food and drinks if anyone runs short.
  2. Gear: Minimally have a good helmet, gloves, heavy boots, blue jeans and a long sleeved shirt. Full dirt riding gear is ideal: Dirt helmet, goggles, chest protector, elbow guards, gloves, knee pads and dirt boots. Regular dual sport riding and touring gear is ok too, but be aware it may get hot.
  3. Mechanical: bike in good order, knobbies will work best, however dual-sport tires will work also. Street bike tires will provide a unique experience! ;-)
  4. Tools: Having a good tool kit is always good. Kari will be bringing a limited number of tools and a tire pump. There is also air available at the ranger station.
  5. Lunch: Traditionally I (Kari) bring quite a bit of food for everybody - sausage, bread, crackers, cheese, Gator-Ade, chocolate, and so forth, so if you forget your lunch it is no disaster. There will be plenty to eat.

Trail Ride: We gear the trail rides to different levels of ability. The trails are mostly one-way so that once you commit you are really committed to finishing the ride. I have not once had a person find the ride too difficult to complete without assistance. I generally start with beginner trails and then work up to the easy intermediate trails, and make a circuit all the way around the entire dirt riding park. This ride takes about an hour or so, and you will be quite tired when it is over. We do a very easy warm-up loop beforehand, and have a very "whoop"-y easy trail to finish up the day if there still is any energy left. I do all three, so it's up to you how much riding you do.

Thanks, and I hope to see you there!
